Christmas in Portugal

For Christmas the Portuguese people eat bacalhau otherwise known as cod fish. It is accompanied with boiled potatoes boiled cabbage and carrots.
This would be the first course of Christmas Eve dinner. The second course is more optional, we always have  turkey legs and thighs  which is eaten with rice and salad. Then of course is dessert which this year is a delicious mango mousse. Usually it is a really yummy chocolate mousse. My mother in law Lucilia is a very good cook.

Please pray for Mário´s family, they are not following the Lord. Mário´s father is having some health issues because of his drinking, but he is a little more open because of this.

Do you have any unusual Christmas traditions or family members not doing well?

Feliz Natal!

“Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress.
The people walking in darkness have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.”
Isaiah 9:1-2a

Thank you for your faithfullness in praying and supporting us this last year.
God´s grace and peace be with you this 2016.

October Update

Dear friends and family, October 16, 2015

As fall is finaly here and Thanksgiving around the corner, we would like to share with you what we are thankfull for and give you a few prayer requests.

First of all we want to thank you for praying for us. Your prayers have sustained us this year through hard times. Only in eternity will we know how God has used you to support us and the Miratejo Church and we are very greatfull for that.

We are enjoying our new house, that we moved into in Febuary. We have continued to work on the house and renovate different areas that needed to be updated. There are still things we need to work on, but we will take one step at a time. It has already been a blessing to have more space for hosting visitors and for Lorena to play.

We were greatfull to be able to have a team of 18 from Clackamas, Oregon visit us in August. They were a wonderfull encouragement to us as a family and to our church as they spent time with us and did Vacation Bible School in two locations.

During the last few months Lancy has been suffereing from pain in her abdomen. After visiting several doctors we finaly found out that the pain was from kidney stones. One of the stones was so big she needed to have surgery. October 7th she had surgery and spent four days in the hospital. She is now recovering, but still has to deal with several smaller stones that were not able to removed and now have to be treated with medication.

Please continue to pray for Mário as a pastor. This year there have been a lot of sinful situations at church; young people that leave the Lord for the world, couples that have deep problems in their relationships, greed and envy are problems delt with everyday. In the mist of it all we see God building several other familys up, streching them and using them to serve the Church and to glorify the Lord.

Lorena is getting taller every day. She speaks mostly Portugues, but understands a lot of English. She has been giving us a hard time all summer tring to potty train her, but finally it looks like she is starting to get it.

Please also pray for us, we are going through the adoption process here in Portugal, that God would guide every step.

“Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy. Those who go out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with them.” Psalm 126:5-6

Thank you once again,
Mário, Lancy & Lorena

Kids Day

June 7th was a special Sunday, here in Portugal it was kids day. Instead of having our normal church service we did outreach in our neighborhood. We had bummper balls, water games, and even set up a car race track, the kids had lots of fun. We had a local missionary share the Gospel and many people made professions of faith. We had a great turn out with around 200 people coming thru at some point.

It was a blessing to hear from Michelle about the Power and Impact of Prayer.

April Update

 Thank You
First of all we want to thank each one of you for your prayers, your encouragement, thru emails, cards, notes on facebook. We got so many it is difficult to answer all of them. It is wonderful to be part of God´s family. We truly have been blessed by you, and we have felt God´s presence with us.

Difficult times
We have prayed constantly for the last year and a half for Holiness in our church. Sadly this last year we have seen a lot of our people slowly falling away from the Lord. For many of them it has simply been difficult to pay the price of living for the Lord. The world seems to offer them a more attractive and easier life. Please pray that we may stay true to teaching God´s Word, and pray that God would bring the fallen back to fellowship with Him.

"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."
-Galatians 6:9

Financial Class

During our time here at the church, we have noticed that most people are very bad at managing their finances. Living month to month, getting into debt, several families have even lost their homes to the bank.  Back when Mário and I were engaged we took Crown Financial Class with a missionary that was serving here in Portugal.  During these next few months Mário will be teaching this same class to two different groups, a total of about 25 adults. Pray that we all can be faithful stewards of what He gives us.

 Church Building
About a month ago the men from church spotted a building for sale a few blocks down from our building now. It is almost three times the size as our building now and is a really good price, 70,000 dollars. There are still a few maybes about the building and they are checking to see if the zoning can be changed. So please pray with us about this possibility.
Lorena is two!

Please pray for these special events:
Mother´s day
Children´s day
Women´s Retreat
Men´s Conference
VBS with team from Oregon

Baby Ester

Bless the Lord, O my soul,                                                March 2015
and all that is within me,
    bless his holy name!
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits,
Psalm 103:1-2

We just wanted to thank each one of you for praying for us during these last few days. Some of you without knowing what has been going on.

In December we found out Baby Ester had a problem in one of her lungs, a cyst that had damaged half of her left lung. By February the doctors were convinced that it had stopped growing and that it would not cause more problems, she would just need a small surgery once she was born.

March 4th at eight months, I realized I had not felt baby move in a while and tried to get her to move for me, she didn´t. So we called the hospital, they said to come in right away. In the ER they did an ultrasound and we saw her heart beating fine. She had turned right side up since the last ultrasound, so maybe that is why I didn´t feel her moving like before.

The next day I had a scheduled ultrasound with our regular doctor, I still had not felt her move. The doctor saw right away that there was a problem with her growth and her heart beat was very faint. So they immediately took me in for a  C-section. Everything happened very quickly, but baby Ester did not make it past birth. Apparently the cyst was a tumor and had grown very rapidly in the three weeks since the last ultrasound.

Please pray for us that we might keep our eyes on Jesus, trust in Him and His promises.

 But, as it is written,
“What no eye has seen, nor ear heard,
nor the heart of man imagined,
what God has prepared for those who love him”
1 Corinthians 2:9

Thank you for all your love your prayers and so many messages you have sent us.

Mario, Lancy & Lorena
